Product Description

Conceived to accompany the eponymous exhibition, Engadin explores the wellspring of inspiration that German artist Gerhard Richter has found within the Engadin region of the Swiss Alps. On his first visit to the region in the late ’80s, Richter was seduced by the sublime views of dazzling blue lakes and majestic mountain peaks. Throughout the subsequent decades, the artist has continuously returned to the destination, translating the region into his own distinct vision.
Featuring 80 color illustrations, this catalog compiles the abstract paintings, overpainted photographs, drawings and objects Richter has created while visiting Engadin. The volume includes never-before-seen archival images, as well as an illuminating essay by the exhibition curator, Dieter Schwarz, who further fleshes out the artist’s philosophical and aesthetic attachments to the Alpine landscapes.
Born in Dresden in 1932, Gerhard Richter migrated to West Germany in 1961, settling in Düsseldorf. He has exhibited internationally for the last five decades, with retrospectives in New York, Paris, Berlin and London. He lives and works in Cologne.
