Launched in April 2023, Moderns That Matter employed a multi-phase approach to assemble a record and inventory of places and spaces that have and continue to define Sarasota.
The initial research was augmented with a public nomination phase. Between November 2023 and January 2024, residents and those who care about Sarasota shared their favorite buildings, properties, and stories. Over 340 individuals submitted more than 580 nominations.
A list of 100 was assembled using a defined set of criteria and input from outside experts. Spanning over 10 decades, the Sarasota 100 reflects the community's 20th- and early -21st century history and development and embodies its evolving values and aspirations. Many of the sites are associated with the Sarasota School of Architecture and the region's tradition of innovative modernist architecture.
